More than 6,800 students applied to become members of the School of Medicine’s Class of 2024. First-year medical students at the Creighton University School of Medicine took their first official step toward becoming physicians on Friday, Aug. 3, when they participated in the school’s 23rd annual White Coat Ceremony. During the ceremony, a white coat is placed on each student's shoulders signifying their entrance into the medical profession. “I realized I wanted to be a part of the Oath Writing Committee ever since I heard that our White Coat Ceremony would be different than the other years,” said Timothy Sullivan, SOM Class of 2024. This year, 99 of the 100 members of the class did sit under a tent, but they were spaced at least six feet apart. Dr. Chandran explained the meaning of the white coat ceremony, which was created by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation in 1993, and Alessia Lavin, Class of ’21,described the gold pins, designed in 2001, which were given to each student. During the ceremony, the dental students also received a blessing of the hands and took the student dental pledge. For the last quarter-century, the White Coat Ceremony has been a ritual at U.S. medical schools, one that officially welcomes students into the medical profession and emphasizes the responsibility they carry as they don the traditional physician’s white coat.
